Friday Facts

What a great week it was last week!  We have been able to go outside and we have gotten a lot of work done in the classroom as well.  We are gearing up for St. Patrick's day in the classroom where we try to catch a leprechaun.  Don't forget to send in your traps this week.  Before everyone goes home on Wednesday, we will set traps and see what happens on Thursday morning!

In writing, we have begun our new unit of study where we are learning about persuasive writing. With this writing style, we are working on using the word "because" correctly and working on expanding sentences with details.  For example, instead of just writing, "You should like pizza.", we are looking for something like, "you should like pizza because the the cheese is delicious."  The more detail that can be added to a sentence the better.  We have really worked hard this past week adding "more" to our stories.  We will continue to work on  persuasive stories in the next coming weeks.

During our OG time in class, we are starting to work on learning about syllables.  Right now, our focus is on closed syllables (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.  These are words that have a short vowel in middle.  When we do syllable work in the classroom, you will see a different paper come home.  The children also practice sentence dictation on the back, but the words we are using are a little more difficult and the spelling patterns are meant to encourage the children to use the information that we have learned up to this point to write their sentence with minimal adult help.

Our visit to the planetarium was a lot of fun!  We learned about stars and planets.  We learned how the Earth rotates around the sun and we talked about the changes that happen due to the rotation.  We also talked about some constellations that you could see up in the sky at night.

During our Social Studies time last week, we have started to discuss what city, state, country, and planet we live in.  We have compared big cities with smaller ones, larger states and countries with smaller ones, and even talked about the amount of land versus water on our planet.  This week, we will continue our discussion on this topic and also start to talk about some of the symbols of our country.

Have a great week!
