Friday Facts

Pajama day was a success!  All of the kids looked great in their pj's today!  We have met our final goal for the PTO fundraiser!  Thank you so much to everyone!  Friday was really fun because we had an ice cream treat at lunch, an extra recess, and pajama day.  My favorite quote from the day was, "Mrs. Hall, it can't get any better than this!"

We have been all about Fall in our room this week.  We have been talking about what some typical Fall changes should be happening outside, even though crazy Indiana weather is not cooperating on us!  We have read several Fall related books and started talking about what are some of our favorite Fall activities.

During our writing block, we have been working on learning the saying, "when writers think they are done, they have just begun."  This is meant to help the children with looking at their picture and deciding if they can add more details and looking at their writing to see if they can add more details as well.  We have also officially taught all of the letters of the alphabet so I am really starting to encourage each child to listen for the many different sounds they hear in words and try to write them on their paper.

Here are some pictures from our apple unit of the different activities that we completed.

Have a great weekend!

100 Book Club

Fun Facts!

We are in full swing learning about apples last week and this week. We have been reading several stories about how an apple grows, we have learned about several of the different varieties of apples in class, and we are talking about how an apple can taste sweet or sour.

A fun activity we have at centers this week is we are pretending to balance apples (bean bags) on our heads just like the characters we read about in the story 10 Apples On Top by Dr. Seuss.   So far the most anyone has balanced is four.

During our shared reading time we are focusing on sequencing of events. When reading a story, we are looking for the beginning, middle, and end. We have also tied this in to our apple study with creating an apple story of our own by talking about the steps to eating an apple. Another skill we are working on during this time is learning about finding the number of syllables in words (how many beats or parts we hear) and  counting the number of words in a sentence.

We continue to work on learning letter sounds each day during our OG time.  Pick a three letter word and have your child see if they can show you how to finger spell that word. They should put one finger out for every sound they hear in that word.

For our social studies chapter this week, we are talking about how to solve problems when they happen. So far we have learned about how to take three deep breathes to calm down and how to be a better listener when a problem happens.

We are having a change contest to go along with our Fall fundraising campaign. Your child brought home a marked ziplock bag for this if you choose to participate. The winning grade level earns an ice cream party and an extra recess.

Finally, the entire school voted to have a crazy hair day this Friday since we met our first fundraising goal for the PTO. Way to go Tigers!

Bullying Convocation

We had a great program today to learn about bullying called Jill's Giant Adventure. We learned about being assertive but also how to show empathy to others needs. The program was based off of the tale Jack and the Beanstalk.
