Friday Facts!

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful relaxing Spring Break!  It has been so much fun hearing about all of the great adventures that everyone has had.  It is hard to imagine that we are on the last quarter of our school year.  The rest of April and May has a lot of fun activities planned.  Here is another copy of the list that was sent out over email:

May 25: No School- Memorial Day
May 26: Track and Field Day

May 27: Last Day of School

This week in class we focused on Earth day since it is next week.  We spent some time talking about and reading stories about our Earth.  We also discussed some things we could do and are doing to help take care of the Earth.  Next week, we will be looking at the life cycle of a frog and working on learning facts about frogs.

We have really "bumped" up our writing requirements in class lately.  We are continuing to work on adding a beginning, middle, and end to a story and continuing to check our "COPS" rules.  Now we are taking some time to revisit what a narrative, informational story, and an opinion story would look like through the eyes of a reader and not just the writer.  We are focusing in on writing for an audience by making sure to add more details to our sentences and our entire story.  For example instead of just writing "I love my mom.", we talked about adding more by saying, "I love my mom's cooking.  She makes the best....."  It has been great to see what is being written in the classroom!

During our OG time in class, we are working on recognizing the sounds for -ck, -dge,  and -tch.  We have learned that those sounds are found at the end of a short word after a short vowel.  I have been amazed at the number of kids that are independently remembering this rule when they are writing on their own.  It has been great!

Finally, on an exciting note, our lunch menu will change slightly on Wednesday. The Carmel Clay  Food Service had a School Lunch Recipe Contest a few months ago and the winner for the main dish recipe for elementary schools was a student in 4th grade at CE.  In honor of that win, the cafeteria will be offering a Meatball Slider Sandwich as the hot lunch choice that day instead of Taco Fiesta Bowl.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
